Welcome to Our Parish
Christ Our Light Parish was formally established on 10 August 2024 when Most Rev. Peter A. Comensoli, Archbishop of Melbourne, decreed the amalgamation of St Agnes' Parish Highett and Our Lady of the Assumption Parish Cheltenham — along with the eastern section of the former Hampton East Parish — into one new unified parish.
Together we serve the communities of Highett, Cheltenham and surrounds from our two beautiful churches, sharing a unified Mass timetable, parish staff and many involved in parish ministry. Our parish sits in Melbourne's famous Sandbelt region, approximately 20 kilometres south-east of the city centre. Our parish sits in Melbourne's famous "sand belt" region, approximately 20 kilometres south-east of the city centre.
We believe the door to salvation is always open, and so are the doors of our churches. Our mission is to be fully devoted to Christ— opening our arms to all in search of truth and walking in Jesus’ footsteps through communal works of charity and love.
Our Two Churches
Both churches share a unified Mass timetable and are served by the same pastoral team, ensuring all members of our community have access to regular worship and the sacraments.

Our Heritage
The first Mass in Highett was celebrated by Father O'Hanlon from Mentone in 1948. St Agnes’ Parish was officially established in May 1951 with Father Gerard Quilter as the first Parish Priest, and the current church was blessed by Archbishop Knox on 10 September 1969.
Our Lady of the Assumption Parish has its origins in Cheltenham in the early 1950s. OLA School opened in February 1952 under the care of Brigidine Sisters, and OLA was formally established as a parish on 2 February 1958. The current church — the third on the site — was blessed by Archbishop Frank Little on 8 July 1990.
The parishes were partnered in July 2020. On 10 August 2024, Archbishop Peter A Comensoli formally decreed the establishment of the new Parish of Christ Our Light, incorporating also the eastern section of the former Hampton East Parish.
There are opportunities for everyone to get involved and deepen their faith. All parishioners and those interested in joining our community are warmly welcome to participate in any of our groups and ministries.
Readers, Special Ministers of the Eucharist, Sacristans, Musicians and Singers all play a vital role in enriching our communal worship. New members always welcome.

Parish News & Updates
We are invited to deepen our understanding of synodality in parish life. Synodality is not a modern invention — from the earliest Church, Christians gathered to pray, listen and discern together in the Holy Spirit.

Our commitment to the safety of all children and vulnerable adults
We are committed to a safe and nurturing culture for all children and vulnerable adults in our Catholic communities.
The Catholic Archdiocese of Melbourne, together with our Parish holds the care, safety and wellbeing of children and vulnerable adults as central and fundamental responsibilities of the Church. This commitment is drawn from and inherent to the teaching and mission of Jesus Christ, with love, justice and the sanctity of each human person at the heart of the Gospel.
We want our children and vulnerable adults to be safe, happy and empowered.
The Catholic Archdiocese of Melbourne has a universal expectation for the protection of children and vulnerable adults. It is resolutely committed to ensuring that all those engaged in the Church promote the inherent dignity of young people and vulnerable adults and their fundamental right to be respected and nurtured in a safe environment. This is particularly so for the most vulnerable, including aboriginal children, those from culturally and/or linguistically diverse backgrounds and children and adults with disabilities.
The Catholic Church has a moral, legal and mission-driven responsibility to create nurturing environments where children and vulnerable adults are respected, their voices are heard and where they are safe and feel safe.
We have zero tolerance of child abuse and all allegations and safety concerns will be treated seriously and reported in line with our legal obligations, our moral obligations and our Church policies.
Creating child-safe environments is a dynamic process that involves active participation and responsibility by parishes, schools, families and communities. It is marked by collaboration, vigilance and proactive approaches across policies, procedures and practices.
We are committed to preventing child abuse and identifying risks early and then reducing or removing them. If you see something of concern, please email: [email protected]
Every person involved in the Catholic Church has a responsibility to understand the important and specific role he/she plays individually and collectively to ensure that the wellbeing and safety of all children and vulnerable adults is at the forefront of all they do and every decision they make.
